Visiting Colonial Williamsburg during the Holdiay season is a treat for all the senses. The doors of the historic district are decorated brightly with seasonal wreaths made of natural material, the inticing smell of burning wood fires fills the air, and the costumed guides are dressed in their winter garb.
This past weekend Colonial Williamsburg celebrated the Grand Illumination at during which time on Sunday evening all the homes along Duke Of Gloucester Street are illuminated at dusk and the cressets – elevated baskets full of burning wood – are ablaze all along the street. Crowds gather in anticipation for the finale of the evening.
The Grand Illumination culminates in a show of 18th Century style fireworks at three location in the Historic District – The Capitol, The Magazine, and The Governor’s Palace.
