The Nether Providence Township Zoning Board voted 4-0 in a January meeting to deny the application by Today’s Child Learning Centers to open a new newest facility in a home up for sale at the intersection of South Providence and Possum Hollow roads.
An agreement of sale for the firm to purchase the property is contingent on receiving zoning approval for the change.
Seventeen residents – including a township commissioner – voiced opposition to the plans. Among the reasons cited were concerns over increased traffic, parking, a change in the residential character of the neighborhood and possible future uses of the property.
Today’s Child Learning, a provider of educational programs for preschoolers and daycare for infants and toddlers, intended to spend about $300,000 on renovations that would clear the way for the house to serve as a day-care center.
The firm, which currently has operations at about 20 other locations, envisioned an enrollment of no more than 40 children, ranging from infants to age 12, and an on-site staff of eight. Most of the children would be preschoolers.
