Colleville-Sur-Mer, France is a town along the Normandy coast which you probably have never heard of. Located there is the American Military Cemetery that overlooks Omaha Beach, one of the Allied invasion beaches of the 1944 Normandy Campaign.
It was a strikingly beautiful place last Thursday when I had the opportunity to visit. Rows and rows of white marble crosses, all in lines of unmatched military precision – marking the final resting place for over 9,300 American soldiers.
It is a solemn place, a place where everyday is Memorial Day. The sounds of birds and carillon bells echo through the cool breeze which comes off Omaha Beach.
The site today is strikingly different than the scene of unimaginable horror almost 68 years ago to the day on June 6, 1944. Many of the young men interred at Colleville-Sur-Mer fell within sight of their final resting place.
We all need to remember all the American soldiers who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom this Memorial Day and everyday.
