Kids And Adults Are Invited To The Library For Money Matters And Magic

Craig Collis (M.Ed.), math educator and professional magician, will be presenting an informative program that entertains as well as informs entitled Money Matters and Magic at the Helen Kate Furness Library on Saturday January 18, 2014 starting at noon. The program offers fun and informative themes that tie concepts of money with an entertaining element of magic that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. The program will include magic, games, music and audience participation to explain to children concepts related to making choices about money – spending, saving and sharing. For both children and adults, this program is a part of MoneySmart@ Your Library, sponsored by the Delaware County Library System and FINRA (Financial Industry Regulatory Authority).

The Friends Of The Thomas Leiper House will be hosting the annual Colonial Christmas Open House at the Leiper House located at 521 Avondale Road in Wallingford PA on Sunday December 15, 2013 from 1 PM until 6 PM. Rooms in the Colonial era home of Thomas Leiper will be decorated for the Holidays by local garden clubs. Refreshments will be served in the Music Room and Dining Room in celebration of Leiper’s 268th birthday.

Thomas Leiper was born on December 15, 1745 in Strathaven, Scotland. and was an influential businessman and politician.

New Owner Plans Transformation Of Granite Run Mall

The Mall’s New Owner Has Big Plans For The Site

Granite Run Mall, which was built in 1974, currently resembles a retail ghost town, however the finiancially troubled mall was recently sold to a new owner, Horsham, PA based BET Investments, for a reported $24 million. BET recently unvieled it’s conceptual plan for the transformation of the mall to Middletown Township’s land planning committee.

BET’s plan calls for a mixed use retail and residential development on the 58-acre property. The mall’s existing three anchor stores – Boscov’s, Sears and JCPenney – would remain, but the interior of the mall itself would be demolished. In its place would be an outdoor courtyard surrounded by upscale retail shops, sit-down restaurants with outdoor dining, seating areas, green spaces and other amenities to create an attractive, walkable “Main Street” concept.

Also proposed are two four-story, high-end apartment buildings, with 240 units on the Oriole Avenue side of the mall property and another 125 units on the former ChiChi’s restaurant site facing Route 352. Most apartments would be one-bedroom units which would be marketed to young professionals and empty nesters. The outlying Kohl’s and Acme stores, as well as the as stand alone strip of stores fronting Baltimore Pike would all remain. There are also plans to enlarge the current movie theater.

SEPTA Doomsday Plan Calls For End Of Media-Elwyn Rail Service

Will The R3 Train Continue Pulling Into Wallingford Station?

Can you imagine the end of local rail service? What impact would such a move have on local commuters, and what would be the negative impact on housing values in our community?

The suspension of the Media-Elwyn regional rail line in 2015 is called for in the SEPTA’s appropriately labeled doomsday plan.

Amid it’s highest ridership in a quarter-century, and it’s highest Regional Rail ridership ever, SEPTA has recently unveiled a plan to eliminate nine of its 13 rail lines and shorten two others, close a subway line, and convert trolley routes to bus lines if the state doesn’t come up with more money for public transit this year. This “service realignment” plan would begin next year, and service cuts would continue until 2023.

Deteriorating railroad infrastructure, inherited by SEPTA from the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Reading Company, are the biggest drivers of SEPTA’s maintenance funding gap. So the ax will fall hardest through service cuts on Regional Rail passengers.

Regional rail infrastructure problems have been center stage locally with the closure on two consecutive Sundays of the Crum Creek rail bridge between Swarthmore and Wallingford. The bridge, originally built in 1895, required $100,000 in emergency repairs. There are also issues with 3 other Media-Elwyn rail bridges that span the Ridley, Darby, and Cobbs creeks.

The state legislature is wrangling over how much to provide for public transit, how much to increase gas taxes and motorist fees, and linking transportation to efforts to privatize the state liquor business. Failure to adequately fund public transit could trigger the doomsday plan.
