The number of people forming households is back from post-recession lows, but economists are alarmed because housing production is failing to keep up. That shortfall is putting pressure on home prices and rents, which is jeopardizing affordability for modest-income households in markets across the country, according to The State of the Nation’s Housing 2019 report, released on Tuesday from the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies.

The number of homeowners has risen significantly over the past few years, buoyed mostly by a growth in baby boomer and millennial households, the report notes. On the other hand, the number of renter households has fallen for the second consecutive year. The renter household is continuing to drop, following 12 preceding years of growth.

Amazon has been offering entire house kits on its site – free shipping included – and they’re getting snatched up quickly. This has prompted questions about Amazon venturing into real estate.

The online retail giant has tiny-home offerings, prefabricated and modular housing that are built in factories. The homes have been priced from $5,000 to $65,000 and sometimes sell out in hours.

For example, a 172-square-foot, $7,250 prefab cabin that went viral sold out soon after it was listed on Amazon. The house ships for free and is touted as being able to be built in just eight hours. It’s being promoted as an “ideal home office or guest house.”

30-year fixed-rate mortgages: averaged 4.06%, with an average 0.5 point, falling from last week’s 4.07% average. Last year at this time, 30-year rates averaged 4.66%.
15-year fixed-rate mortgages: averaged 3.51%, with an average 0.4 point, falling from a 3.53% average last week. A year ago, 15-year rates averaged 4.15%.
5-year hybrid adjustable-rate mortgages: averaged 3.68%, with an average 0.4 point, rising from last week’s 3.66% average. A year ago, 5-year ARMs averaged 3.87%.
