Nether Providence Unveils New Recycling Schedule

A new schedule for the curbside pickup of recyclables has been approved by Nether Providence Township Commissioners as at their December meeting.

Township residents will receive a mailing regarding the new recycling pickup schedule in the near future.

The new schedule will take effect in January, along with a new recycling pickup contractor – J.P. Mascaro & Sons. The new schedule will consolidate recycling pickups in the township to three days.

The new recycling collection schedule wil be:

Ward 1 – Thursday

Ward 2 – Wednesday

Ward 3 – Tuesday

Ward 4 – Tuesday

Ward 5 – Wednesday

Ward 6 – Wednesday

Ward 7 – Thursday

Note that pickup days do not change for all Wards.

Commisioners also backed a plan to include the annual municipal recycling fee of $68 for each household in the annual Nether Providence Township tax bill.

The Friends Of The Thomas Leiper House will be hosting a Colonial Christmas Open House at the Leiper House located at 521 Avondale Road in Wallingford on Sunday December 18, 2011, from 1 PM until 5 PM. The house will be decorated for the Holidays, and there will also be a celebration of Leiper’s birthday. Thomas Leiper was born on December 15, 1745 in Strathaven, Scotland.

Key remnants of the former Nether Providence High School, which was demolished in 2010 as part of the $54 million dollar Middle School renovation, are forming the centerpiece of a tribute garden to former school.

The large front archway, several sandstone medallions, and education themed gargoyles make up the memorial which stands just to the left of the entrance to the Strath Haven Middle School Wallingford Real Estate - Nether Providence High School Date Stone , close to the spot they once occupied.

The design, cost, and location of the memorial has been a topic of much school board debate. The tribute was initially planning to incorporate the key pieces into a memorial wall, but the structural requirements of that proposal exceeded the budget for the project.

Several important features of the former school were salvaged, and stored while plans for the tribute were debated. The Nether Providence High School closed in 1984 when the Nether Providence and Swarthmore school districts merged forming Wallingford Swarthmore School District. The former high school then became Strath Haven Middle School.

On October 21, 2011, at 1:45 PM a public dedication ceremony at the Strath Haven Middle School on Providence Road is planned for the tribute garden.

Woodward Road Bridge Project Status

Delivery of a major component, a box culvert, for the new bridge to replace one on Woodward Road that had partially crumbled is expected the week of August 15th.

The new span should take another three to four weeks for the completion of the project, according to Nether Providence Township Engineer Charles Catania.

Woodward Road has been closed to through-traffic since early June, when preliminary work was initiated.

Inspectors determined in July 2009 that the bridge had deteriorated to the point where one lane of traffic had to be temporarily closed and the weight limit reduced from 10 to 6 tons.

Earlier this year, the township hired McKinney Construction Co. of Media to replace the bridge at a cost of $315,501.

Funding for the work will come from a 15-year loan of $654,000 that Nether Providence has obtained from the Delaware Valley Regional Finance Authority.

What Is Happening Along Crum Creek?

If you have been along Avondale Road in the vicinity of the Leiper House you can not help notice the rather large amount of construction equipment and activity in the area. This project is the effort of the Central Delaware County Authority (CDCA) who is undertaking this significant construction project to upgrade an aging concrete sewer line that runs from Newtown Square to Crum Lynne. A portion of this line runs through Swarthmore College’s Crum Woods and continues along the Crum Creek in Nether Providence Township. The CDCA is comprised of 5 boroughs and 7 townships in Delaware County.

The aging infrastructure known as the Crum Creek Interceptor was constructed in 1938. It starts at Chester Pike and runs north along Crum Creek, to Nether Providence. In 1960, the line was extended to the Delaware County Community College to service the Township of Marple.

The interceptor was initially designed to service the entire Lower Crum Creek Watershed, however, the 1960 extension was designed only to service Marple Township. The remaining communities decided not to connect due to a lack of development. This resulted in the newer part of the interceptor not having capacity for the lower Crum Creek Watershed as initially anticipate.

Forty years later, the vision of servicing the lower Crum Creek Watershed is becoming a reality. Three new Townships have joined the Authority, each now needing centralized sewer service. The Crum Creek Interceptor, parts of which are over 60 years old, need rehabilitation and in certain areas, capacity expansion.

This project will rehabilitate the interceptor and increase it’s capacity to service the entire Lower Crum Creek.

Construction Along Crum Creek In Swarthmore

On November 9, 2010, the Authority awarded this contract(s) to Metra Industries for a combine price of $14,723,010.

Work on the new pipe installation began in April and is anticipated to run through August, followed by with landscape restoration work. The project is scheduled to be completed in December 2011.
