Nether Providence Implements Sewer Lateral Inspections

Sewer Line Being Cleaned

Nether Providence Township has made the inspection of sewer lateral pipes a requirement for the issuance of a Use & Occupancy certificate. Item #13 on the township’s U&O requires homeowners under Township Ordinance 782 to conduct an inspection of the home’s sanitary sewer line. The ordinance requires two sewer line tests. Homeowners can opt for either a smoke test or a dye test, both of which can pinpoint areas of the sanitary sewer line where surface water can enter the system, and a mandatory video inspection of the sewer line via a video camera.

Properties that have been built within the last 10 years and properties that have performed a sewer inspection within the past 5 years are exempt, otherwise when you are required to perform sewer lateral testing when you sell you home.

The Delaware County Regional Water Quality Control Authority’s (DELCORA) is urging it’s members to take action to limit the amount of surface water that is entering each community’s sewer lateral infrastructure. However the implementation of a point of sale plan to maintain the sewer lateral infrastructure may not be the most effective way to go. It is estimated that it will take 31 years in Nether Providence Township to fix the issue at the point of sale as properties are sold. The 4th annual Nether Providence Township Family Fun Day sponsored by the Township is scheduled for Saturday September 19, 2015 from 1PM to – 4PM in the upper parking lot of the Strath Haven Middle School adjacent to the football field. Parking is available in the Copples Lane parking lot.

There are many activities planned for the day with games and prizes, food, Garden City and South Media fire companies, Nether Providence Township Police Department, an appearance by the Delco Cruisers, face painting, moon bounces, and much more! Rain date is Sunday September 20, 2015.

SEPTA Begins R3 Bridge Replacement Project In Wallingford

Access Road Being Built Off Rodgers Lane In Wallingford

The project to replace the 120 year old SEPTA regional rail bridge spanning Crum Creek in Nether Providence Township has started with the construction of an access road off Rodgers Lane. The current steel viaduct which connects the Nether Providence and Swarthmore legs of the Media-Elwyn line was built in built in 1895 and has been deemed to be beyond it’s useful life.

The $89.9 million replacement project’s 1st phase which will last until Spring 2016 involves the building of temporary access roads and new concrete footings, piers and abutments for the span. Rail service across the bridge will not be interrupted during this period.

During stage 2 of work, in the summer of 2016, new girders, the deck and catenary towers and new tracks will be installed. No service will be available on that section of the line for a 10-week period, with bus service provided between Nether Providence and Swarthmore instead.

The third and final stage, from the fall of 2016 through the spring of 2017, will entail the removal of the existing bridge and towers, as well as access roads, followed by site restoration and landscaping.
