Apparently there is an ongoing invasion in Wallingford – an invasion of bamboo.

In it’s June meeting the Nether Providence Board Of Commissioners approved a law aimed at stemming the spread of bamboo in local neighborhoods. There has been an increasing number of complaints regarding the spread of the invasive plant into neighboring yards.

Under the ordinance, when the township receives a complaint about the encroachment of any bamboo plant or root onto another property, or when officials spot it themselves, notice will be given to the landowner or tenant to remove the offending bamboo plant or root system.

The notice will state specifically what must be done, with a fix required within 30 days. If the offending party does not remedy the spread the township reserves the right to perform the work and bill the property owner. Citations could also be issued ranging from a fine of not less that $25 a day up to $100 a day as long as the situation persists.

Bamboo is a very invasive plant, and precautions must be taken to prevent it’s rampant spread, including containing the root system within a barrier made of high-density polypropylene or polyethylene, with a thickness of at least 40 millimeters. The barrier must extend at least 30 inches below-ground and 3 inches above-ground, around the entire perimeter of the plant.

Bamboo plants must be located, trimmed and maintained so that no part of the vegetation is closer than 10 feet from any property line.

Perhaps we could let loose some Panda bears to help control the problem.
